The bass guitar is traditionally used as a support instrument in any rhythm section of a band. Although there are also “bass solo” parts in live band performances, the bass guitar is not usually seen being performed as a solo instrument without any other instruments to accompany it.
Norwegian Wood
Composed by the Beatles
Arranged by Victor Wooten
Here is Victor Wooten, a bassist who further enhanced bass playing by improving “tapping” style with traditional “plucking” style in such a way that he elevated the bass guitar into a solo instrument, capable of supporting itself with no other instruments involved. Although the concept was first introduced by Jaco Pastorius, many have taken Jaco’s footsteps and Mr. Wooten is one of those who stands out among the rest.
Here are two videos of Victor performing solo on his bass as part of the Bela Fleck and the Flecktones concert.
