Among my greatest influences in creating music is the composer Yasunori Mitsuda, whose works include music for the video games Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross and Xenogears. He has a distinct style of using simple melodies with fluid and dynamic bass lines, paired with tribal percussion and a string orchestra. The end result is usually a piece rich in harmony and melody.
Here now is a video of one of my favorite role-playing game (RPG) opening music, Chrono Cross, composed by Yasunori Mitsuda. It begins with a melodic trio of a guitar, flute and fretless bass, which is quickly followed by heavy percussion and a string orchestra. A signature format of Mitsuda. Enjoy!
