The Making of the Patintero Video
Song by Makiling
Directed by Khavn dela Cruz
Shadowplay by Makiling
When my band, Makiling, released our second album (Patintero sa Ilalim ng Buwan) back in 2002, we longed to make a music video for one of the tracks. The first choice was “Patintero” for it was very a visual and cheerful song. Luckily, one of our filmmaker friends, Khavn dela Cruz volunteered to make the video for us. We shot the video all in one night at my residence’s living room.
In this video we used shadow play, a technique which we used when we were still visual arts students at the Philippine High School for the Arts. We operate cutout cardboard puppets and objects behind a white screen. On overhead projector illuminates the puppets from behind. Most of the shadow puppets are caricatures of the band members. Unfortunately, due to time constraints from both the band and Khavn, the video never got aired on music channels. That aside, here’s the music video in full glory!
