He is very passionate in what he does, and that is to pave the way for bot free servers in Philippine Ragnarok Online. For those who don’t know, bots are third party programs that can be used by abusive players to cheat their way in online games. Level Up Games became a bit lenient with bots when they could not contain its rapid spreading at their main servers. Mostly because the botters comprise a large population of the paying customers.
But now, Valkyrie, a free to play server has arrived. What does Level Up has to say? Is the so-called Midgard Police doing anything to prevent bots from invading Valkyrie? What can Goenitz, the most passionate bot executioner do? Find out after the jump!

Leopold Goenitz. I also go as Seto Kaiba, but not recently.
How did you join the Level Up (LU) team?
I’ve been there since the beginning of Ragnarok Online. I was taken in by LU from the day that they set up the Ragnaboards in the old PHPBB forum of theirs. When they invited me in to be a moderator, I accepted it. During the course of the initial stages of Midgard Police, immediately, I became the de-facto senior.
How long have you been working for LU?
Pretty much, I’ve been there from the very beginning of pRO. 4 years, give or take.
That’s quite long! Is it really your dream to be working in the gaming industry?
Somewhat, but not exactly. It’s more like helping the people shape up, and of course bridging the people and the leaders.
So what exactly is Level Up’s stand on botting in Valkyrie?
In 4-chanese, GTFO. (Get the fark out!)
What do you say about the bots in Valkyrie?
They’re a doomed race that will be banned. Also criminals in the making, because they can’t follow one simple rule. What they act in the game reflects their real life personality. They even reason out that they can’t play, because of studies, family, and so on. It’s not an excuse. I’ve been reading lame excuses from caught botters, I honestly don’t know if I should burst in anger, laugh, pity them, or what. Reading them… ugh, I wish I could forget about that.
Which server gave you the most challenge back when bots were still being aggresively persecuted in main servers?
EVERY server. You have to deal with the tips, and looking some on your own. Then there’s also the coordination with GMs. You need them to be online so they can whoop bot ass.And also at that time, they have to see the bots for themselves to merit sanctions. This was the time killpRObots was in its most active period.
Can you tell us a bit of the basics on the process of bot catching?
Sorry, I can’t elaborate; I don’t want to give bot developers and botters tips on how to improve their bots. However, it’s the basic check: verify and jail routine.
Do you follow certain procedures or guidelines in bot catching?
Generally yes. Some variations exist to adapt to strategies some bots have. We have agreed among ourselves that deviating from procedure is okay, if it means catching them with the best evidence possible.
Do you also make your own improvisations when on the field?
Pretty much. Some equipment we use to catch bots came from ideas out of brainstormings from us MPs earlier. We acquire certain softwares to make our job easier. And then, we set up a reporting Yahoo Messenger ID to help feed information in. And then there’s this thread I set up in the Ragnaboards where they can find bots to ban. Two YMs dedicated for bot reporting are active; one is mine, killprobots, and the other, by Lyranix, lyranix_of_preseyah. The other MPs are thinking of setting up YM reporting channels too. But I think I will be setting up a secondary reporting site, since the response is overwhelming and merits expansion.
Doing my own bot hunting in Valkyrie Server
There were some complaints about Valkyrians being misidentified as bots, they were put in “jail” but they claim to be innocent, what is your response on such incidents?
Many of those who claim they’re not bots are liars. We return negative captures immediately, and that’s that. Negative captures mean we captured a human, and the evidence that suggest they’re bots is inconclusive. As for those proven bots, they’ll never be released under any circumstances. And even if they do get out, they are already tagged for banning.
If a bot gets caught, is it in line for banning immediately?
Yes. Our banlist together with our evidences is sent to our Game Master contact for immediate banning.
If a bot is banned, is it a perma ban? Can the owner file a plea of reconsideration for his account?
Yes, perma ban in Valkyrie. As in one-hit-kill. No chances. None, zero, zilch, nada.
Ouch for Valkyrie botters! If a banned account in Valkyrie also has high level characters in another server, will it also be part of the ban?
Of course. It’s an account ban that will be performed.
Thanks for clearing that one. Now let’s go by the numbers, how many bots have you caught in your entire career as GM (estimate)? How many of them got banned?
Well, before I answer that, I’m still a Midgard Police. We’re technically not GMs… though we are technically considered subGMs. The running total of bots banned is around 400+, the largest surge coming from Valkyrie. Sometimes the procedure we take in reporting taxes on us MPs that some characters for banning is delayed, because we have to arrange our evidences and our list to be submitted. That was before though. And another factor for swift banning is the GM who will be doing it. So far, for MPs, the turnaround time between submission to GMs and banning is improving.
What is a genuine trait of seeing a bot? What signs do you look for before declaring that a certain character is a bot?
That’s part of our investigation routines; sorry, I cannot tell you that, other than people with really good eyes and ex-botters can tell one by just merely looking.
Because of your dedication in bot catching, certain people in the RO Community have developed a certain “attitude” towards you, how do you deal with that? Does it pressure you in any way?
Doesn’t bother me. They only know I’m (and the other MPs) are around when someone starts whining that they got jailed.
The only pressure I get is rounding up the bots and properly filing the report to my GM contact. As far as social contacts go, I have no problems. Many fans help me by reporting bots. Those who plea often get ignored. (They’re condemned to begin with.) Punks or flamers… well, they get jailed like the rest of them. We got rules against flaming and punking. Punking is a deliberate attack against authority, whether verbal or actual.

Has anyone threatened or harrased you in real life for your persecution of their botted accounts?
Once in Thor. Have yet to hear some in Valkyrie, though I’ve been hearing lots of it behind my back, through my informants who tell me about it. One even threatened me never to set foot in LU Live. Never been harrassed in real life, thankfully.

It’s been in the backburner lately. Pity. I really wanted to redesign and become active in it, but, eh, duty comes first. Anyone want to give my blog a makeover? 
Do you play other games aside from LU! games?
Yes. But not many of them are MMOs. Doujin (homebrewn) and arcade games are in my list too.
What does GM Goenitz do to relax?
MP (Midgard Police) Goenitz. GM… maybe in the future. /heh My idea of relaxation is a quiet place, really long sleep, and meditation in dark and quiet places. There’s also classical musics and writing stories.
What can you say about Erap’s conviction?
He had it coming.
What’s your message to all botters?
Repent or face doom. We’re told not to forgive botters anymore. When they’re caught botting…BOOM!
What’s your message to all non botters?
Fight for your world, fight for your right. Fight for what is right.

wala mga to kng gumawa sana kayo ng server na walang bot at the start palang, gaganahan tao mag laro dahil pinaghirapan lht ng effort at items. pero kht my bagong server namn bot pa rin tapos yung gamit na nga sa bagong server halos lht binibili, ang hirap mag hunt ng gamit kht 2 days na 10hrs ka sa isang lugar wala kht isang card. “IF” LU is really serious bout taking down bots they would have implemented it…. they would have launched it when openkore is not yet that powerful… but you know why they wont make that move?? Lets face it majority of PROs population is bot.. who feeds their wallets if there’s no bot?? WE DO!! ^_^
There are only few real hardcore players here.. and i mean people who devote most of their time playing manually.. its either they are filthy rich or just got no social life or whatsoever.. its not a pity but they just love the game hardcore.
Removing botting in Valkyrie is IMPOSSIBLE trust me… il bet all my purchases in Valkyrie if they can remove bot successfully…. IF LU wants change then ban anything bot like period.. so far ive been botting from day 1.. i have 25 characters to be exact.. and so far im earning really good.. haha now where’s the gm.. LOLS

I pity the lame people who feel botting is the way to go on a free-to-play server like Valkyrie. It’s bad enough that LU became lenient on the commercial servers, but for the bots to possess a server they have absolutely no financial cost to maintain outside of equipping chars… it’s already beyond stupidity. As for the guy who claims Master Diwa as botting, let me remind you: *it’s impossible to bot through the ranking system*, because of the way the ranking system works. It’s easy for a good leveled Taekwon Ranker to kill 100 enemies, and I’ve supported him in one of his point-earning sessions and he is THAT good.

who wants to manually keep hitting 10000000000000000 monsters who drop nothing but pieces of crap for 10hrs just to level up?
let’s face it…the fun is when your character is much, much richer and stronger and you get to kick other people’s lame asses.
and with the pathetic drop rate in the server plus the item mall, there is no more reason to manually grind. it used to be fun when you know had a fair chance of getting a good rare from time to time but with what we have now, there’s just no more fun in it.
and please don’t say there is no sense of achievement in a botted account. say there is no sense of achievement in playing the game, period! it’s a freaking game and i’d play it how i want it. ban me if you must or if you can, either way, i’m playing it the way i want to play it.
i’m satisfied with botting my way to riches and power, the item mall they implemented is just another shortcut there anyway.

For those who think botting is the best way to level up, you should try making large parties like what people do during the first days of a new server. Don’t you guys realize how fast EXP is in a party of 12? Even if the EXP is divided equally in an even share party of 12, each monster gives 10% more EXP for every party member in even share… meaning every member gets 17.5% EXP per monster and NOT 8.33% per monster. If every member actually fought in combat and killed one monster each, you’re getting around 210% EXP *each* and not just 100%. Combine the EXP from the party with EXP carded footgear and Field Manuals, and you get so much EXP per hour that it’s EASY to get to 99 within, I dunno… two weeks in Valkyrie, maybe less? That’s the secret behind kRO players: even though they look down horribly on bots — worse than pRO Thorians — they level up even faster than any bot can manage…. it’s all a matter of perspective and a change in culture really. Now as for zeny well, that comes with time (and with PHP if you’re in Valkyrie
).

Oh and before I forget, kaya ko sinabi 210% each kasi 17.5% per member x 12 monsters. Sabihin nating 12 man party vs monsters that give 500 EXP each. Let’s say all players take 3 seconds to kill the monsters. A single bot, with each take and a support, might take 2 seconds to kill the monster, but will only get 15 000 EXP per minute. A party of 12, each handling one monster, will take only 87 EXP each BUT because they kill 12 every 3 seconds, that’s 20 880 EXP per minute PER MEMBER. Let’s bring it up a notch: with EXP shoes and FM that’s 605 EXP for the lonely bot or 18 150 EXP per minute. For the party, that’s around 143 EXP per kill, but because you have 12 people in the party that’s 34 320 EXP per minute PER MEMBER. We’re talking about almost double the EXP per minute per member compared to a fully supported bot. Combine THAT with the fact that 12 players can handle tougher monsters than 2 bots (1 support, 1 attack), and we’re talking about MAJOR EXP HOARDING WITHOUT BOTS. Now, think of this: for every character you bot, that’s less EXP for you AND less EXP for everyone. The more people that bot, the less they get from grinding AND the less people available for partying. People think that botting is a winning choice for them, but in truth they’re not only degrading the community BUT they’re actually losing out on their own characters’ abilities AND they don’t learn anything from RO.

RO has its own community IF PEOPLE LET IT LIVE AND GROW. In a no-bot community, we have friendship, fun (in spite of the grinding), and a sense of purpose even in leveling. But with a heavily botted community, we have mistrust, hatred between pro and anti bots, and the idea that PvM is merely a delay between making a character and killing others in PvP/PK/WoE. Is that what people really want in RO, making enemies instead of friends?

Soon people will be so frustrated at the plague of bot armies that only the desperate people will stay in Valkyrie (ba’t pa sila magtatiyaga sa online game na siksikan ng bot kung meron namang mga private server na hostile sa bot?). Bots will kill Valkyrie and ruin pRO…

Wait, let me get this straight: you have fun obtaining things that don’t exist outside a virtual world, you believe that Rune-Midgard’s economy revolves around you, you revel in destroying the very game you supposedly play by removing the human factor in 90% of what you would normally be doing in-game, and it’s a mental challenge for you to hack into an online game, right?
Note that while LU *could* do something drastic to fix the bot situation, there is what you call the legal system, something botters apparently ignore completely. If you want to blame someone for LU’s inaction, blame Gravity, because unless you can prove without a doubt that LU *can* do something about bots that does NOT require a major reprogramming or restructuring AND does NOT violate any agreements between GameGuard, Gravity and other associates, THEN would your blaming LU of their inefficiency against bots be legit.
Remember, we’re talking about corporations and not just some petty private server that can ban botters, block IPs, and edit the game at will.
Pray tell, how will destroying the game environment help stop botting or fix LU’s policies?

Dati akong anti-bot (sobra sa pagka anti-bot at umabot ng 3 months of anti-bot) nung una kong laro sa pRO pero ng tumagal nawala ang pagiging anti-bot ko dahil halos lahat na noon ay botters at naiinggit ako sa kanila kc transcend na sila samantalang ako, 2nd job pa rin.
Nung nawala yung bot sa commercial servers, ang konti ng tao. Ayos sa akin yung walang bot kasi nga makakapagusap ka ng mga HUMAN players at kung yun nga ang balak ng LUG (yung mawala yung bots) edi yun ang masusunod kasi para sa kabutihan nmn ng game e. As I pointed out, it’s not the high level characters that matter, it’s the people in the game that matter. Oo nga high level ka at guild mo may ari ng lahat ng agit at malalakas na equip sa game, pero lahat naman ng online either bot o galit sa bot, sino pa magiging kaibigan mo IN GAME? Oo nga may forums pang bot pero mga kapwa botter mga kasama mo, hanap nila hindi para maging kaibigan mo o para kausapin ka ng matino, habol lang nila bot.
MMOG means Massively MULTIPLAYER Online Game. Remove the player and replace with bot, you get an empty shell of a game.
Hell, hayaan ng Blizzard na magka-bot sa WoW sigurado bagsak game nila, kahit gaano pa kaganda ang WoW.
As for the jRO issue, hindi basta basta ang paglipat ng technology kasi hindi Gravity ang may ari ng RagDefender, Gungho po ang may ari nun, so maraming usapin (at pera) ang magpapalitan bago maimplement.
Before botters reply with the “hail bots” ek ek, I’d like to congratulate you on reducing the game not only to mere digits, but to making the whole thing a statistics game. Bravo, you have all shown how big your e-*****es are (overcompensating?).

And by the way, we might ignore botters in commercial servers because LU is lenient with them, but wtf libre na nga yung Valkyrie sasaksakan nyo pa ng bot? They intentionally placed items in the armory para dun sila kumita, kasi nga wala silang ibang mapagkukuhanan ng kita sa game. Ngayon kung gusto ninyo maglaro na walang binabayaran fine PERO AYUSIN NYO NAMAN PRIORITIES SA BUHAY. KUNG HINDI NYO NGA PRIORITY ANG RO BAKIT PA KAYO NAGBO-BOT? Oo nga may high level character ka, pero could you just stop, look at your character and ask yourself, “character ko ba talaga ‘to?” You may own the character and its resources, but is that YOUR character?
The characters aren’t just tools, they are a representation of you in game, your avatar. That’s why the best pilots are those who play THEIR character, not their tools, not their accounts, their AVATARS.
It’s not just a matter of having a powerful character per se, but is that character really a reflection of you?
… don’t tell me that your botted character really *is* a representation of your personality : a shallow, lifeless being who has potential yet never is able to fully develop himself and so vents out his frustration by making duplicates and automatons to lessen a non-existent workload. Because if that was the case, then no wonder you are so proud of being a botter.

Actually RO2 already has bots even before it was released in Japan. All computer games — MMOG or otherwise — has cheat software like bots or trainers because as long as there is someone lazy and willing to cheat the system, they *will* find a way to cheat it. Even if it DOES have detrimental side-effects in the in-game society.
And yes, this is mostly a fight for Valkyrie’s survival. We already know that the commercial servers have already died socially, with only small circles of friends plus hardcore individuals fighting in worlds choked with bots… but in Valkyrie, being both a new server AND a free-to-play server, still has a chance to live.
I’m still proud to be Thorian, even though only a dozen or so players remain on the server and I myself occupy Valkyrie most of the time (due to financial reasons). Why would I be proud of a tiny community that hates bots when I have far better equipment and more powerful and mature characters in other servers, particularly in Tyr where I have a high level SinX with Ice Pick? The reason is that every person in Thor was actually a person (except for the delinquent bot that is). My happiest RO times aren’t owning players in PvP; that’s what DotA and Counter-Strike are for. My best times in-game are the times not only with my guildmates and virtual friends, but also the times when I have complete strangers striking up a chat and I help them through their first steps in the game.
RO may be an online RPG, but like most Korean RPGs it’s actually more of a social game with a mask of RPG-ness — If I wanted a true RPG experience I’d go for D&D over RO any time. Whenever I see kids and teens playing over at the internet cafes near my place, I don’t see them slouched over their computer consoles silently leveling solo. I see them chatting about the games they play (be it RAN or private server RO), teaching others how to do things the right way (in their opinion at least), and watching as the characters pwn or get pwned by either an incoming mob or a dueling match.
Things that I saw in RO during its first months, then quietly died as botters aimed for the high levels.
What keeps other online games afloat while RO drowns? It’s the people, that’s what keeps it afloat.
Now that LU has a free-to-play server, I *might* be able to convince the internet cafes to install pRO once again and have fun in the new free-to-play Valkyrie…. but when the most RO-addicted friend in my neighborhood, Sonic-Blower, found that the game was bottable, do you know what his reaction was?

Mahihirapan ako i-convince sila na bumalik sa commercial servers hindi lang dahil mas mabilis EXP sa private servers sa kanila, pati naman kasi puro pera at bot ung server, so baka mas mainam na hayaan ko na lang sila *sigh*

if ive be given the chance to eliminate the bot i can do it/gg… simply lng naman eh.. no major restructing of the entire system.. kaso magaling masyado ang LU.. dba team of ITs yan so i suppose na, theyve figured it out.. and btw, i know what im talking bout when i said bot can be eliminated… its just that LU is acting so dumb… ung paraan nila na pag-iiba ng server details is an act made out of desperation… if un lng din ang gagawin nila eh di re-hack again.. its too basic ung mga pnaggawa nila.. if may GM na reading this.. reply d2 sa post nato at share ko sa inyo pano ang naging paraan ng bot elimanation sa server (private) na im helping with… khit private server toh same lng naman sa pRO natin.. very the same ang lahat… and the effeciency rate of this proggy we are using is 80% ung mga uber talented lng nakakabot pa rin…/gg
and btw, ragdefender is on the priorities right now to be cracked.. unlike LU we take the word prioirity as it is not like their lame promises… i bet even if we will reach december nothing will happen… cmon dont wait for ragdefender to be released here its copyrighted product and therefore it will cost LU a hell of a budget… simply lang gagawin nila.. makinig sa suggestion ko at try ang proggy ko.. un lng.. d yan pagmamayabang… its a way to help but im pretty sure no one will take me seriously… but if someone will mistakenly notice this post.. try me and u will see bot is doomed.. ahehe maybe lng.. if this works well and hindi counter hack ng mga kakilala ko
speaking of friends at the forum im at.. we are real frends and not bot frends.. LOLness naman tska speaking of piloting… im not the super best pero im not the lousiest either… WE are not ruining the game.. we are part of the yin and yang of the ragnarok world… we balance the game for u so that LU will have to think of a way to stop us…. hehehe until LU makes a move.. bot will prevail and wont be stopped…. my understanding of time management will vary from yours Yralyn coz we have different thoughts in the same field and stop saying bout IN GAME ATTITUDE = IRL attitude its not…. i have my reasons why i bot which im not gonna elaborate to spare u from the drama ^_^ lets just say WE ARE THE TRIALS for LU haha.. ok mukhang madrama pagkasabi…

sus…after sometime pag madami na na ban gagawa nang remove from ban na item or parang php para ma remove yung pag ka ban…haha pag kikitaan yno lng ulit yan eh….mang ban kayo pero yung na ban pag nag php release na ulit…tpos ban lng ulit..haha ganun lng yan trick nyo kaya kayo nang huhuli ngayun kasi alam nyo hapit mag php mga tga valkyrie…hay…sana di tutuo cnabi ko.

Actually RO2 already has bots even before it was released in Japan. All computer games — MMOG or otherwise — has cheat software like bots or trainers because as long as there is someone lazy and willing to cheat the system, they *will* find a way to cheat it. Even if it DOES have detrimental side-effects in the in-game society.
And yes, this is mostly a fight for Valkyrie’s survival. We already know that the commercial servers have already died socially, with only small circles of friends plus hardcore individuals fighting in worlds choked with bots… but in Valkyrie, being both a new server AND a free-to-play server, still has a chance to live.
I’m still proud to be Thorian, even though only a dozen or so players remain on the server and I myself occupy Valkyrie most of the time (due to financial reasons). Why would I be proud of a tiny community that hates bots when I have far better equipment and more powerful and mature characters in other servers, particularly in Tyr where I have a high level SinX with Ice Pick? The reason is that every person in Thor was actually a person (except for the delinquent bot that is). My happiest RO times aren’t owning players in PvP; that’s what DotA and Counter-Strike are for. My best times in-game are the times not only with my guildmates and virtual friends, but also the times when I have complete strangers striking up a chat and I help them through their first steps in the game.
RO may be an online RPG, but like most Korean RPGs it’s actually more of a social game with a mask of RPG-ness — If I wanted a true RPG experience I’d go for D&D over RO any time. Whenever I see kids and teens playing over at the internet cafes near my place, I don’t see them slouched over their computer consoles silently leveling solo. I see them chatting about the games they play (be it RAN or private server RO), teaching others how to do things the right way (in their opinion at least), and watching as the characters pwn or get pwned by either an incoming mob or a dueling match.
Things that I saw in RO during its first months, then quietly died as botters aimed for the high levels.

bkit po kaninang (oct 28 sunday) mga 3-4:30 nang hapon parang nag patch ba yung valkyrie? kc po nag bobot ako nun tpos na dc di na mka reconnect. tpos pag press ko nang valk nag patch. sandali lng sya nag patch tpos yung huli kong tingin 9k yung players tpos pag ka log in ko nung hndi nag rereconnect bot ko 4k nlng!!! aw! grabe dami nag bobot. pero ngayun ayus na ulit bot ko! ang labo ano yung binalik nila yung patch? nag re patch sila? nag labo! ako lng ba nag ka prob nung time na yn? 3-4:30 yung eh sunday oct 28.

We all know that the LU’s RO commercial servers had a hard time “earning” money from the people. When they started to implement this so called “MPs”, the population got so low. We know that commercial servers have loads, that turns LU filthy rich. Then LU gave up on banning bots because they noticed how their sales dropped.
Suddenly we just see posts in RO website that only in during sieges are when bots are prohibited. Now that’s like they’re saying that “It’s ok to bot, just so we can earn money!”
I think implementing the Hypermart is cool, but the price isnt.
That’s one point in Valkyrie. They ban botters in the F2P server because they know that botters wont have a hard time buying equips because of the bot’s ‘harvest’. This way, people will again purchase cards and spend them on the premium items. Imagine buying a headgear worth a thousand bucks. That’s just a crap.
Well i’m not saying that i’m pro botting, but im just ticked of on how obvious LU had been corrupting the game.

gad, people can be so dense…. malaki ang risk of losing it all sa valkyrie pag nagbot ka. Dun ka sa commercial servers where your account counts (with paid game time).
valkyrie is for hard core gamers. commercial servers are for hobby gamers. choose your game.

Actually masterbot you *might* want to approach Waukeen or any other of the Vanguards or staff of LU if you and your colleagues are serious in helping LU. I also respect your views, and I would help improve the system if I could, honestly. But I still fail to understand how bringing LU ruin would help them approach an anonymous group for help… it’s not like we’re talking about a single entity but rather a corporation, a collective entity.
You might have the solution to the bot situation, but as long as you are hidden in the darkness and avoiding contact with the authorities, then your efforts to “save” the game will be for nothing.
