Someone out there’s a billionaire now and he’s a gamer. Yes, you read that right. Forbes website recently published a list of the 40 Richest People in Japan and topping the list is retired Nintendo chairman, Hiroshi Yamauchi with a reported net worth of $8 billion. This is such great news for the international gaming community as it further changes the general public’s negative notions on the gaming industry, especially parents of kid gamers. Now, it is becoming clearer and clearer, that there is a future for everyone in the gaming industry.
This boost in Yamauchi’s coffers is mostly attributed to the strong sales of the Wii and Nintendo DS consoles. And I quote from the website:
Retired as Nintendo’s chairman after 55 years in 2005 just before company took off with its popular Wii videogame console, which is outselling rival offerings Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox. Also scored with its handheld gaming devices. Net income jumped 48% to $2.5 billion. Rarely photographed, Yamauchi is still a big shareholder.
Perhaps in the future, the gaming industry will become so big that it will overshadow Hollywood. Just maybe.
